The specifics of Contra dancing

The tapping of feet on a creaking wood floor, the lively melodies of the band, the didactic voice of the caller magnified by the microphone: All of these sounds mark a ballroom brought to life by contra dancing.

The dancing style has roots in 17th century England but is still practiced on a smaller scale today. While the dance seems to be more popular in the New England area, organizations like the Mid-Missouri Traditional Dancers keep the dance alive in the Midwest. [1:12]
